Beautifully hand-painted and richly expressive, this pair of sculptures celebrates tradition, spirituality, and craft. The female figure wears a traditional maroon áo dài adorned with gold floral motifs and a green sash, holding what appears to be a symbolic offering. The male figure, likely a monk, stands in quiet contemplation, dressed in a flowing red and black robe with a dramatic lacquer-like finish. Together, they make a powerful visual statement. Both sculptures are crafted from a dense plaster or composite material with a lacquered finish and stand freely on individual plinth-style bases. Both statues were officially cleared for export by the Hanoi Department of Culture, as evidenced by the original seals on their bases, a unique detail that adds to their authenticity and provenance. Visible wear consistent with age, including paint loss, chipping, and cracking throughout, most notably on the male figure’s head and robes. All part of their well-earned patina and vintage appeal.
