This elegant pair of 1920s French Art Deco bookends features seated Pierrot figures resting on tiered gray marble bases. Likely crafted from painted spelter, the figures wear flowing red costumes with ruffled collars and ivory-toned faces, each captured in a quiet, contemplative pose. Inspired by characters from French pantomime and Commedia dell’arte, these figures evoke Pierrot—the poetic, love-struck clown known for his melancholy and expressive stillness. While often associated with Harlequin, who is more playful and animated, these bookends reflect Pierrot’s romantic and introspective spirit. The solid marble bases feature soft white veining and are substantial enough to support a row of books while also serving as sculptural art pieces. Some paint loss to the figures and light surface marks on the marble consistent with age. One base has small chips to the corners. 5.5ʺ wide, 3.75ʺ deep, and 6.25ʺ high.
