A striking original abstract by Albert E. Smith (1929-2008, San Francisco, CA), signed “A.S.” lower right and signed on the reverse, with a nearly illegible title on the back that reads Sunset I. Painted in 1976, this oil on canvas captures the energy of a coastal sunset through bold, intersecting strokes in vivid red, orange, yellow, blue, and black against a serene sky and glowing sun. The composition balances structure and spontaneity, evoking sails, rigging, and reflections without sacrificing abstraction’s expressive freedom. The work’s textured brushwork and layered palette-knife details create a dynamic, tactile surface that draws the eye from every angle. It is beautifully presented in a contemporary whitewashed wood frame with a natural linen liner, complementing the coastal-inspired palette and mid-century sensibility.
